| Conscious Over Sub | |
| 7/5/2004 |
(Lyrics) Is it a state of consciousness, or a province?
|
| 12:34 | |
| 6/27/2004 |
(Lyrics) A time, a place. A number that keeps confronting me.
|
| Faith In Humanity | |
| 5/16/2004 |
(Lyrics) Something hard to come by these days.
|
| Sorry To Trouble You | |
| 4/16/2004 |
(Lyrics) More from the new album. Featuring swirly electronic things!
|
| The Go-Karts of Ft. Wayne | |
| 4/8/2004 |
(Lyrics) This is the title track to our upcoming album. What? Album? No, really! Very soon.
|
| Stock Photo Man | |
| 9/9/2003 |
(Lyrics) I think this is a really good song. Hope you agree.
|
| Camera Obscura | |
| 8/31/2003 |
(Lyrics) This was inspired by an article about the earliest days of photography. (Probably the most complicated song here. It goes through at least four different time signatures, only because for some reason, they just felt right.)
|
| Hot For Teacher | |
| 8/20/2003 |
For some reason I decided to record a version of this Van Halen party anthem from 1984 and recast it as a sort of mournful waltz.
|
| Window | |
| 8/20/2003 |
This is a song by They Might Be Giants. Recorded this version a couple of years ago for a TMBG tribute album that never happened.
|
| Information (The More I Learn) | |
| 8/3/2003 |
(Lyrics) This song fulfills my longtime dream of writing a song with a parenthetical title. The accordion is back in this one, for all you accordion fans out there. It's about the peculiar modern problem of being overwhelmed by information of all kinds, some of dubious origin.
|
| Odd Time | |
| 7/29/2003 |
(Lyrics) I had an odd time writing this oddly anthemic song. It's an odd experience for odd people who enjoy a good odd-fashioned chorus in 9/4. |
| Kevin, Waiting | |
| 11/13/2002 |
(Lyrics) Poor Kevin... (He's waiting, you see.)
|
| Pain By Numbers (Demo) | |
| 11/13/2002 |
(Lyrics) A song in defense of that most hated profession, telemarketing. (Vacant Stairs demo.)
|
| Talk To Myself | |
| 3/8/2002 |
(Lyrics) This is the song that would not die, and went through about 10 completely different versions in
the last three weeks. Minor key, fast acoustic guitar with some neat effects on the end.
|
| Penny Tray | |
| 1/30/2002 |
(Lyrics) Some neat backward bits and interesting vocal harmony stuff.
Got a penny? Leave a penny. Need a penny? Get a job.
|
| Colossal Blunder | |
| 1/16/2002 |
(Lyrics) A song about how seemingly minor things can mean something. Ironically, it is not in a minor key.
The bridge has some interesting lead guitar parts, at least by the standards of our somewhat inept lead guitarist.
|
| Didn't Mean To | |
| 11/13/2001 |
(Lyrics) This one is about as "hard rock" as we get around here (or as we USED to get, prior to becoming a butt-kicking one-man rockfest extravaganza.)
|
| Undetectably Yours | |
| 8/12/2001 |
(Lyrics) A heartfelt plea from a shut-in.
|
| Reflect | |
| 7/26/2001 |
(Lyrics) Dark, arpeggiated guitar with orchestral bits. And it's in 5/8 time! Wow, how about that.
|
| Alive | |
| 7/17/2001 |
Gentle acoustic rock with accordion. If you're depressed, this one might cheer you up.
|
| The Rectangle, The Triangle, and The Line | |
| 7/4/2001 |
(Lyrics) A geometric epic of irregular pathos.
|
| Another Year | |
| 3/30/2001 |
This is a somewhat personal and depressing song that has somehow ended up being highly regarded by people "close to the band."
|
| Graverobbing | |
| 1/23/2001 |
This is pretty TMBGish. In my opinion one of my catchier songs. The last song written before a two and a half month
period of being depressed, quitting my job, moving to Arizona, and having writer's block. Fortunately, that's all over now.
|
| Corporal Max | |
| 1/20/2001 |
This may be about people who play their music too loud, or it may be about military types. Who knows for sure? It has a
cool (but very simple) guitar riff, though. Why does it seem like people who play super-loud music always play crap? You
never hear anyone blasting, say, XTC through their 400-megawatt bass system.
|
| Rat Me Out | |
| 9/2/2000 |
I was at the pet store and saw a sign advertising a sale on "Fancy Rats, Large." Why are they fancy, exactly?
Well, it turns out that "fancy" means multi-colored, but it still struck me as an odd word to use to describe a rat.
Hence, this song.
|
| Girl So Sweet | |
| 8/2/2000 |
This has become one of my more well-known songs for its bouncy, old-timey sound and cannibalistic lyrics.
The entire song came to me at 2 AM one night as I was just falling asleep, and I immediately had to get up and record the entire thing.
A definite Tom Lehrer influence on this one.
|
| Great Big Lung | |
| 7/11/2000 |
Written shortly after Stupe Soleau and has the same synth bell sound as the original version of that song. Based
around a funky "Burning Grooves" drum loop. Many people think this song is extremely weird. My apartment had shower
curtains on both sides of the shower; one side had an air vent. Air would blow erratically through, causing the
inner curtain to billow out. It looked like some kind of giant creepy breathing thing. That is the great big lung
of the song's title.
|
| Love Is In The Air | |
| 6/10/2000 |
An obnoxious anti-love song with syrupy, John Lennon-y verses and a gritty, synthy chorus featuring my best Billy Corgan
impersonation.
|
| Beef Jerky | |
| 3/26/2000 |
I was experimenting with multi-tracked vocal harmonies, and was stuck for lyrics, so I read the back off
of a beef jerky wrapper to come up with this little jingle, for which I still have not received a dime
(nor a cease-and-desist letter for that matter.)
